Top Ten World Cup Adverts
I've compiled my Top Ten World Cup ad's of all time. We all know our favourites but Nostalgia is fun!
1. World Cup 1998 (airport)
That Brazil team. That Airport. Original Ronaldo gliding trough an airport in what is now, one of the most iconic Nike campaigns ever.
2. 2002 World Cup Nike Scorpion Ad
2002 was the year of the Japan/Korea World Cup but it was also the year of the Nike Scorpion K.O tournament. This ad is littered with stars of individual quality playing in the familiar concrete cage that a lot of us grew up in. This was the freshman year with Eric Cantona as ambassador of Nike.
3. Brasil Vs Portugal
Playing on the inherent connection of Brasil and the home country of their mother-tongue Portugal as well as the global brand of players like Ronaldinho and Figo, this advert changed football more than most people would care to admit. Ronaldinho’s legendary flip-flap was rife in world football in the aftermath of this ad.
4. Nike 2010 South Africa
Nike pull out all of their stars, not just from Football for this ad. Nike Tennis and Basketball all get cameos as well as Wayne Rooney’s beard and The Simpsons all being hot topics for the months after it’s release.
5. 2006 Pepsi Ad.
Back when Pepsi were all about football. The stars in this are insane when you think about it. A lighthearted approach to the World Cup campaign but a poignant one. The names on show for a sugar filled soft-drink company really shows where the game has come from and where it is now
6. Nike 2014 Winner stays
This advert is beautiful in it’s simplicity. An idea that we’ve all had because we’ve all lived it; being your hero on the pitch. We have all hollered their names as we shoot, dribble or tackle and Nike finally put that feeling we get to the screen.
7. 2006 adidas World Cup
This Adidas advert pulled no punches, pulling out some of the biggest stars in world football playing in an urban, underprivileged setting. A real homage to grass-roots football worldwide.
8. Coco Pops ’94-
I loved this advert and know every word to it, as I’m sure most people do. Not the most pertinent of Football adverts but a memorable and influential one regardless.
9. 2006 Nike R9 ad
Ronaldo was at the forefront of World Football and Nike knew it. At this point in his career, CR9 was untouchable, a real living legend. With Nike’s campaign for the year based around the ‘Joga Bonita’ there was no getting away from the Brazilian God.
10. Adidas 2010 World Cup
Set against the backdrop of a Blockbuster movie with Zizu as the main protagonist and glimpses of the heroes of the World Cup as stars, all fighting for the same success.
